Free Software Opened up

15 12 2007

Ok guys, so here is how its going to go for the free software downloads. I know everyone wants them right away, and I have worked hard on this site and want it to be used. There is potential for a cool forum here, because most of us know each other in real life as well, so you can talk to people you know are local and who actually know what you are talking about.

So, Basically if you want the access to the software, contribute to the community on the site. that means 10-15 comments, posts, or forum posts(if you want a new topic in the forum, just ask somewhere and i will create it!) and you will get the link and can play to your hearts content. Right now the closest guys are bengotow and aaron with their forum posts, but there are some others that are very close as well. I am not going to count crap posts, like ‘i dont understand’, so please take the few minutes to actually write something you are interested about.

So videos from our lecture series on how to create and maintain web pages are now online. They are unedited, but check the downloads section and they are there.

Free Software!

12 12 2007

Guys,
Here is all the software(click read the rest of this entry to see the list) that will be available for online download in our ELMS (Electronic License Management Software) given to us by Microsoft. Basically I will have to set you up as a user, and then you will get an email with the link (I will post it here soon as well). You can log in and download software any time you wish, and you will get the product activation key in an email. Rob D. and I have worked really hard setting this up, so mad street cred to both of us.

We will be doing the online participation thing(see post below) and I will send out details next week. I will test the MSDN (the software distribution) this weekend and make sure its set up correctly, and then I will work out a scheme so you can install some stuff or download some of it over the break and tell you all how it is going to work next week.

I was asked to announce that there is NO support from Vanderbilt, or IEEE/ACM, or anyone but yourself for this software or installing it. (aka if you wanna install Vista, and it craps your computer you and any computer savvy friends you know will have to fix it)

Also asked to announce that this was given to us by Microsoft, the downloads are hosted by Microsoft, and this is in no way illegal. Documentation(the electronic receipt for our MSDN subscription) can be had if you really want proof, just email me

Online Participation Incentive?

2 12 2007

Since the site was just opened up to the public, I am considering offering an incentive for participation in the online community. IEEE/ACM has a subscription to the Microsoft MSDN network, which allows us to download a lot of software, up to and including Windows Vista, for free. I am thinking of waiting a month or so, and for those people who have actively participated in the online community letting them have a login and password so they can download any of the software themselves. These subscriptions normally cost upwards of $1000, so i feel this would be a good incentive to build a community at ieee.vanderbilt.edu.

PS. thanks to the big MSoft (and rep Rob D.) for hooking us up with this
